About the Program:
Our Telling the Art Deco Stories of our Neighborhood's online series continues so you can virtually visit New York's Art Deco enclaves with the Art Deco Society of New York––from anywhere.
In this recorded video presentation––which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home at a time that best fits your schedule––we visit beautiful, mysterious Queens, with architectural historian Francis Morrone to explore the most diverse county in the United States.
Together we see how the borough grew explosively in the interwar years––following the opening of the Queensboro Bridge (1909) and the development of the IRT Flushing Line (1915–28)––which led to a plethora of Art Deco and related modern styles of architecture.
In this full video recording, we survey the architecture of Queens during the 1920s and 30s, with an emphasis on Art Deco and also exploring some byways along the way. On tap are looks at notable buildings such as:
- The great Marine Air Terminal at the New York Municipal Airport
- Most Precious Blood Church and its wonderful Art Deco details
- The strikingly designed Ridgewood Savings Bank in Forest Hills
. . . as well as the vast amount of vernacular Deco to be found throughout the borough!

About the Guide:
Francis Morrone is an architectural historian and a writer, and the author of thirteen books, including "Guide to New York City Urban Landscapes" (W.W. Norton, 2013) and, with Henry Hope Reed, "The New York Public Library: The Architecture and Decoration of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building" (W.W. Norton, 2011), as well as of architectural guidebooks to Philadelphia and to Brooklyn. He is the author of the forthcoming 6th edition of "Blue Guide New York." In addition, Morrone is the recipient of the Landmarks Lion Award of the Historic Districts Council, the Arthur Ross Award of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, and of NYU's Excellence in Teaching Award, and Travel and Leisure Magazine named him one of the thirteen best tour guides in the world. His specialties are 19th-century architecture, public sculpture, and Edith Wharton, and, for the last few years, alternative modernisms of the 20th century.
