About the Program:

Join art historian, curator, and author Lisa Schlansker Kolosek for a beautifully illustrated exploration of the compelling life and prolific career of American photojournalist M. Thérèse Bonney (1894–1978).

In this dynamic presentation we'll be immersed in 1920s and 30s Paris with this peek into Bonney's captivating collection of over 4,000 period photographs held at the research library of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and Archives. This extraordinary, little-known archive chronicles modern design in all its forms in 1920s and 30s Paris. It includes international expositions and annual salon installations, decorative arts, fashion and accessories, architecture, and interiors of private homes and public spaces such as shops, restaurants, and night clubs.

The Bonney collection remains one of the most important documentations of the Art Deco era that exists today. Highlights of this live online talk will include:

  • Objects and interiors by Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Jeanneret, and Le Corbusier
  • The work of architect Robert Mallet-Stevens, artist Jean Dunand, architect Pierre Chareau, and many other design luminaries of interwar Paris
  • Captivating Parisian store fronts and window displays
  • Photos of Paris’ 1925 and 1937 international expositions as well as the Île de France ocean liner
If you love Art Deco design and the vivacious culture of 1920s and 30s Paris, you won't want to miss this enthralling event!

Even though this event is online, it will include a live PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device––as well as a moderated Q&A session with participants.

Can't join us at the time of the live event? No problem! When you register for the live program you are guaranteed to receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation, which you can watch at a time most convenient for you.
