Modernism in Melbourne Video Event

About the Program:

The Art Deco Society of New York’s series of web-based illustrated talks inspired by our Destination DecoTM travel program continues with an exciting virtual visit to see the wide variety of modernist architecture and design in Melbourne!

In this recorded video presentation––which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home at a time that best fits your schedule––award-winning author and Art Deco expert, Robin Grow, surveys Melbourne's major transformation into a dazzling Art Deco center that featured the first truly international style. Grow shows examples of how the style could be seen everywhere––from A (apartment blocks) to Z (Melbourne Zoo)––as well as in department stores, cinemas, residences, churches, banks, schools, factories, government buildings and office blocks, and even in the famous train called the Spirit of Progress.

Sign up now to see how the introduction of new facing materials, such as terracotta and terrazzo, colorized the city and how steel reinforced concrete revolutionized the building processes. Grow highlights designs featuring these new materials as well as murals, large expanses of glass, stylized building signs, and cantilevered balconies.

He also looks into 1920s and 30s social changes that helped shape Melbourne, including motor cars, the role of women as consumers, fashion, dance and music, clothing, and of course cocktails!

In celebration of the release of his latest book, MELMO—Modernist Architecture in Melbourne, Grow also gives a glimpse into how modernism continued to shape Melbourne following WWII and how the city looked to the United States for inspiration to meet postwar demands for manufacturing, housing, sun controls, commercial and civic buildings, leisure activities, and car-based activities.

This recorded video event includes the original PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device.
