About the Program:
Kick off Pride month in true 1920s Deco style with this one-of-a-kind online event, by designer and educator Silas Munro, who will give us a dynamic look into an emerging generation of young black writers, poets, and artists, during what would come to be known as the Harlem Renaissance.
This engaging and informative event will explore how, in 1925, Alain LeRoy Locke was asked to be guest editor of an issue of Survey Graphic, the richly designed periodical covering sociological and political issues. We will see how the infamous issue, titled “Harlem: Mecca of the New Negro”, Locke’s first publication connecting this emerging generation, became the basis for the seminal 1925 anthology The New Negro, marking a shift from a focus on Black bodies to Black consciousness and Black thought.
Munro will continue his visually exciting exploration with a look into how a collective of young, black, and some queer artists would come together to write, design, and self-publish FIRE!!––a publication devoted to younger Negro artists. FIRE!! was conceived by Langston Hughes and Bruce Nugent, who were both featured in The New Negro. They enlisted Wallace Thurman to edit the publication, and commissioned other important black artists to contribute. Don't miss this exploration of the magazine’s varied content of diverse genres including essays, design, illustration, plays, and poetry. Tragically, the headquarters of FIRE!! burned down after the completion of the first issue, but not before its content made equally fiery controversy.
Even though this event is online, it will include a live PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device––as well as a moderated Q&A session with participants.
Can't join us at the time of the live event? No problem! When you register for the live program you are guaranteed to receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation, which you can watch at a time most convenient for you.
