Sydney’s Art Deco Heritage: Architecture and Lifestyle Video Event

About the Program:

The Art Deco Society of New York’s series of web-based illustrated talks inspired by our Destination DecoTM travel program continues with this exciting virtual visit to Sydney.

In this fascinating and visually delightful recorded video presentation––which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home at a time that best fits your schedule––internationally renowned author and speaker on Art Deco, Peter Sheridan, explores how the global influence of the Art Deco design aesthetic became evident in Sydney’s architecture as well as in many other areas of daily life.

Sheridan begins his engaging presentation by sharing the history of Sydney and illustrating how it evolved much like the sprawling suburbia of Los Angeles, into a city rich with stunning examples of Art Deco, rather than like the designed cities of New York and Melbourne.

In this exploration we discover:

  • The special Art Deco commercial and civic buildings in the city's central business district
  • The best Art Deco residences in the region
  • A world class hub of apartment blocks in the Potts Point/Elizabeth Bay area
  • A unique collection of pubs and hotels around the city in all iterations of the Deco style

. . . and more!

In his acclaimed book Sydney Art Deco, Peter Sheridan, for the first time, identifies and showcases the beauty and breadth of Sydney’s built Art Deco heritage. ADSNY is excited to share these findings with you, in addition to some of the accompanying local lifestyle elements from the 1930s and 40s such as art, furniture, and radios!

This recorded video event includes the original PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device.

About the Speaker:

Peter Sheridan is an internationally renowned collector and speaker on Art Deco as well as a committee member of the Art Deco & Modernism Society of Australia and an accredited professional photographer. Sheridan has authored three major photographic reference books on design and architecture: Radio Days (2008), Deco Radio (2014), and Sydney Art Deco (2019).

Beyond his Art Deco-related interests, Sheridan is a senior Sydney dentist, a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, Clinical Senior Lecturer at Sydney University, and a world expert on Clinical Photography. He also works in Cambodia assisting in dental treatment of children and educating dentists. In 2001 Peter was awarded an order of Australia (AM) by the Australian Government for his work with people with Multiple Sclerosis.
