About the Program:
The Art Deco Society of New York’s series of web-based illustrated talks inspired by our Destination DecoTM travel program continues with an exciting virtual visit to Sydney, a multi-cultural city of 5 million people.
In this fascinating and visually delightful presentation, internationally renowned author and speaker on Art Deco, Peter Sheridan, will explore how the global influence of the Art Deco design aesthetic became evident in Sydney’s architecture as well as in many other areas of daily life––although much of this is still unrecognized and undervalued today.
Sheridan will begin his engaging presentation by sharing the history of Sydney and illustrating how it evolved much like the sprawling suburbia of Los Angeles, into a city rich with stunning examples of Art Deco, rather than like the designed cities of New York and Melbourne.
In this exploration we will discover:
- The special Art Deco commercial and civic buildings in the city's central business district
- The best Art Deco residences in the region
- A world class hub of apartment blocks in the Potts Point/Elizabeth Bay area
- A unique collection of pubs and hotels around the city in all iterations of the Deco style
. . . and more!
In his acclaimed book Sydney Art Deco, Peter Sheridan, for the first time, identifies and showcases the beauty and breadth of Sydney’s built Art Deco heritage. ADSNY is excited to share these findings with you, in addition to some of the accompanying local lifestyle elements from the 1930s and 40s such as art, furniture, and radios!
Even though this event is online, it will include a live PowerPoint—with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device––as well as a Q&A session with participants.
Can't join us at the time of the live event? No problem! Those who register will receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation. When you sign up for the program you have the opportunity to watch, or rewatch, the recording at a time more convenient for your schedule.
