About the Programs:

Program 1Texas Deco: Constructing a Modern Identity in the Lone Star State

In this exciting virtual “visit” to Texas, led by David Bush and Jim Parsons of Preservation Houston, you'll explore the fascinating story of how state and city leaders worked together to build an appropriately modern image for the Lone Star State in the 1920s and 30s. Happily, to our delight, Art Deco proved the ideal design language!

This special On Demand video event will show how Texas created:

  • Deco skyscrapers, courthouses, and railroad stations
  • Modernistic schools and hospitals, in smaller towns
  • A statewide movement to mark the centennial of Texas independence from Mexico that resulted in the construction of Fair Park in Dallas––which is one of the world’s only surviving 1930s-era exposition grounds

During this Video Event, David Bush and Jim Parsons discuss and illustrate some of the state’s most stunning modernistic designs and reveal how architects regionalized national and international design movements deep in the heart of Texas.

This visually stunning presentation is sure to be a delight! Click here for all the details about this program.

Program 2Windy City Art Deco

In this recorded video presentation led by Chicago-based educator and author Kathleen Murphy Skolnik, you'll see the many reasons why connoisseurs of Art Deco architecture and design cannot help but be drawn to Chicago!

This engaging Video Event highlights how the city’s soaring Art Deco skyscrapers boast cliff-like setbacks and machine-age imagery that epitomize the glamour, exuberance, and optimism of the era––while also illustrating that Chicago Art Deco is not limited to tall commercial downtown towers. Through this visually stunning presentation, we see how the style beautifully extends to private residences, churches, theaters, and small commercial buildings.

You are sure to enjoy this engaging tour of Chicago’s iconic Art Deco designs as well as less well known examples that demonstrate the wide application of Art Deco to a variety of buildings types throughout the city and the tremendous diversity in its visual expression.

This impressive presentation will show you Chicago like you've never seen it before! Click here for all the details about this program.

Program 3–Forty-Second Street from East to West

In this recorded video presentation, Art Deco expert and tour guide extraordinaire, Anthony W. Robins, leads you on an in-depth virtual tour of Midtown Manhattan’s major boulevard of Deco skyscrapers, which showcases some of the city’s most famous monuments up-close, seen like never before!

As we make our way across Manhattan in this online event, our unique video vantage point offers you the ability to observe hard-to-see architectural details, inside and out, of the:

  • Peerless Chrysler Building, the city’s (and the world’s) most famous Art Deco skyscraper
  • Chanin Building with its iconic Rene Chambellan-designed abstract ornamentation
  • The often-overlooked block between First and Second Avenues with three surprising Deco creations
  • Three remarkable Raymond Hood skyscrapers
  • A fabulous interior by Ely Jacques Kahn

…and so much more!
