Telling the Art Deco Story of Inwood Video Event

About the Program:

Our Telling the Art Deco Stories of our Neighborhood's online series continues with this recorded, Video Event so that you can virtually visit New York's wonderful Art Deco enclaves with the Art Deco Society of New York––from anywhere.

ADSNY is excited to offer this not-to-be-missed event––which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home at a time that best fits your schedule––that explores a neighborhood that we've never featured before! This online tour showcases the Art Deco treasures of Inwood and highlights how the neighborhood boasts an unexpectedly large concentration of Art Deco gems.

In this web-based tour led by architectural historian, Matt Postal, you'll learn what makes this community perched atop Manhattan’s northern tip so special. Like many neighborhoods outside of central Manhattan, Inwood was rural until the arrival of new subway lines dramatically transformed the area in the early 1930s.

From the Cloisters in Ft. Tryon Park to West 218th Street, this virtual tour gives an in-depth look at:

  • Apartment houses designed by the architects Boak & Paris, Horace Ginsbern, George G. Miller, among others
  • Distinctive lobby designs, particularly the pink streamlined interior of 91 Payson Avenue
  • The Elsie Driggs – Lee Gatch Algonquin mural at 165 Seaman Avenue
  • The WPA boathouse and park furnishings that punctuate Inwood Hill Park
  • A monumental late Deco bank by Halsey, McCormack & Helmer
and more!

This recorded Video Event includes the original PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device.

About the Guide:

Our guide, Matt Postal, is an architectural historian and licensed New York City tour guide who lectures about architecture and teaches graduate level classes on the nineteenth and twentieth architectural history in New York.
