Mumbai: Art Deco Jewel of India Video Event

About the Program:

The Art Deco Society of New York’s series of web-based illustrated talks inspired by our Destination Deco program continues with an exciting virtual “visit” to Mumbai with Atul Kumar, head of the Art Deco Society in Mumbai.

In this recorded video presentation—which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home at a time that best fits your schedule—we'll explore how Mumbai, India's financial and film capital, boasts the world's second-largest collection of Art Deco buildings.

Atul introduces us to how Mumbai, then known as Bombay, developed its unique Art Deco vernacular in the early 1930s and continued to utilize the style until the mid-1950s. Through his visual presentation, he leads us on a virtual tour of beautiful Art Deco buildings from this period.

We learn how this era was a significant moment for India, which was marching towards becoming an independent nation with many ideas of what it meant to be Indian in the modernizing new world. These notions were explored and expressed through architecture in the form of relief work, design features, and building elements. The presentation allows us to identify and appreciate these details, which were conceived by first-generation Indian architects in collaboration with homegrown contractors and independent artists.

Atul explains how the variations in Art Deco ornamentation are critical markers that help develop a deeper understanding of the many social, cultural, and economic narratives that played a role during this historical period of nation-building.

This recorded video event includes the original PowerPoint—with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device.

About the Speaker:

Atul Kumar is the Founder Trustee of Art Deco Mumbai. For the past 15 years, he has been actively working on these issues especially within south Mumbai’s Art Deco heritage precinct. He is also on the board of several Trusts that work for preservation of open spaces, civic issues, and social welfare.

About Art Deco Mumbai Trust:

This talk is a wonderful introduction to the work of the Art Deco Mumbai Trust (ADM), which has created the only online repository dedicated to Mumbai’s Art Deco. It works to raise awareness and appreciation of Deco while advocating for its conservation. Founded in 2016, its ongoing photo documentation has identified over 650 Art Deco buildings across the city. As part of its outreach, the not-for-profit Trust hosts walking tours, public lectures, and workshops with schools and colleges. A member of ICADS, it recently launched Mumbai’s Deco in partnership with Google on Google Arts & Culture platform.
