Monday at the Movies Cinema Chat: Trouble in Paradise Video Event

About the Program:

This recording of the Art Deco Society's Mondays at the Movies Cinema Chat—which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home at a time that best fits your schedule—transports you back to the 1930s, when Americans found relief from the stress of everyday life by escaping into Hollywood’s glamorous dream worlds.

Sign up now to view our premiere event with co-authors of Screen Deco: A Celebration of High Style in Hollywood, Howard Mandelbaum and Eric Myers, screen and discuss one of the most stylish and elegant early 1930s romantic comedies, Trouble in Paradise. As you watch Ernst Lubitsch’s 1932 visual delight, you will revel in its witty dialogue, lavish fashions, and what film historian Theodor Huff called “the last word in Modernistic décor.” The over-the-top Art Deco home of wealthy Parisienne Kay Francis, where much of the action is set, is a visual feast for Deco enthusiasts!

Following the film Mandelbaum and Myers lead you through Trouble in Paradise’s saucy premise, where partners-in-crime, Herbert Marshall and Miriam Hopkins, set out to fleece Francis of her jewels and her millions––until that annoying affliction called love threatens to get in the way. Our speakers also discuss how this film showcases Director Lubitsch’s mastery of sexual innuendo and subtle interplay that came to be known as “the Lubitsch touch.”

This video event includes:

  • An introduction of the film by Howard Mandelbaum and Eric Myers
  • The film screening
  • An in-depth exploration of the film by Howard Mandelbaum and Eric Myers
Even though this event is recorded, it includes the live film screening and presentation that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device.

About the Speakers:

Howard Mandelbaum and Eric Myers are the authors of Screen Deco: A Celebration of High Style in Hollywood and Forties Screen Style: A Celebration of High Pastiche in Hollywood. Mandelbaum is the co-founder, with Carlos Clarens, of Photofest, a library of images of the performing arts. Myers is the author of the biography Uncle Mame: The Life of Patrick Dennis. A former film publicist with credit on over sixty feature films, he is now a literary agent, delighting in bringing other authors to print.
