About the Program:

We are excited to take our Telling the Art Deco Stories of our Neighborhood's programs digital so that you can explore New York's wonderful Art Deco enclaves with the Art Deco Society of New York––from anywhere!

Sign up today to join us on a web-based tour of rarely explored interwar architectural treasures of Sunnyside Queens, led by architectural historian, Matt Postal.

In this online tour we will explore how, like many New York neighborhoods, Sunnyside grew exponentially in the early twentieth century due to the development of mass-transit rail services; roadways, such as Queens Boulevard; and in this case, the completion of the Queensborough Bridge in 1909. Almost all of the buildings in Sunnyside were either built before or during the height of the Art Deco style. Many of the sites we will see feature richly decorated façades, entrances, and lobbies.

Join us as we delve into the renowned buildings such as:

  • The Golden Gate Apartments, easily recognized by its iconic black and gold terra-cotta entrance
  • The Beautifully restored Packard Towers
  • Back-to-back twin apartment buildings with lovely Deco detailing
  • Sunnyside Gardens, hailed for its innovative design and a subject of study among architecture students worldwide
and more!

Even though this tour is online, it will include a live PowerPoint—with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device—as well as a Q&A session with participants, just like the format of our in-person talks.

Not able to join us at the time of the event? No problem! Those who register will receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation. When you sign up for the program you have the opportunity to watch, or rewatch, the recording at a time more convenient for your schedule.

About the Guide:
Our guide, Matt Postal, is an architectural historian, licensed New York City tour guide, and researcher and writer of designation reports for the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. Postal also lectures about architecture
and teaches graduate level classes on the nineteenth and twentieth architectural history in New York.
