About the Program:

The Art Deco Society of New York’s series of web-based illustrated talks inspired by our Destination Deco program continues with an exciting “visit” to Paris with architectural historian, Pascal Yves, head of the Paris Art Deco Society.

In his engaging illustrated talk, presented from his Paris home, Pascal will survey French Art Deco innovations during the 1920s and 30s, focusing on the importance of French World’s Fairs and Ocean Liners––two of our favorite topics.

Pascal will use works of two major French architects of the period, Roger-Henri Expert and Pierre Patout, as points of reference as he takes us through important design undertakings of the 1920s and 30s. We will explore many tantalizing aspects of the Paris 1925 L’Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes; the 1931 Exposition coloniale international; and the 1937 Exposition internationale des arts et techniques dans la vie moderne. And to make this presentation even more engaging, he will also highlight France’s most stunning Art Deco ocean liners, SS Île de France, SS L’Atlantique, and SS Normandie.

Pascal will conclude by explaining the impact and influence that these monumental French projects had on America’s 1930s World’s Fairs.

Even though this event is online, it will include a live PowerPoint—with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device—as well as a Q&A session with participants, just like the format of our in-person talks.

This talk is at 1:00 p.m. (EST), which makes it open to Deco enthusiasts everywhere. So, if you're up for a midnight snack in Australia, are enjoying an evening apéritif in Europe, or are breakfasting in California, this is your chance to explore France’s wonderful Art Deco architecture and design with us!

Not able to join us at the time of the event? No problem! Those who register will receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation. When you sign up for the program you have the opportunity to watch, or rewatch, the recording at a time more convenient for your schedule.

About the Speaker:

After studying architecture at Versailles and at the University of Illinois, Pascal Yves participated in the construction of the EuroDisney Park in the 1990s. Since 2000, he alternates administrative work and teaching at the Paris-Malaquais school of architecture, part of the Paris School of Fine Arts. In 2014, he slowed down his teaching to found the Paris Art Deco Society.

About the Paris Art Deco Society:

This talk is a wonderful introduction to the work of the Paris Art Deco Society (PADS), established in 2014, for those interested in the arts and lifestyle of the interwar period. It brings together specialists and amateurs to share and learn about Art Deco in Paris and the arts and lifestyle of the interwar period there and around the world. PADS offers conferences, tours, and other cultural or festive events, and is committed to the protection of the Art Deco buildings and sites in and around Paris.
