About the Program:

On this immersive trip, we will explore how the uniquely glamorous culture of Los Angeles — with its Golden Age of Hollywood — led to the creation of the city’s beautiful Art Deco structures through first-hand glimpses into the breadth and variety of the Deco adaptations unique to California’s architecture and design heritage.

While this trip is available as a five-day package (click here), we are also offering the opportunity to sign up for three single-day immersion packages — Tuesday, May 9thWednesday, May 10th, and Thursday, May 11th — as well as an exciting two-night Weekend on the Queen Mary

On this, Tuesday’s immersion, the day will begin with a deluxe motor coach trip to Burbank, where attendees will get exclusive interior access to two of the city’s prominent Moderne structures and their acclaimed murals — the Burbank Water and Power building and Burbank City Hall. At each location, guides will lead us through these impressive Moderne buildings to see the stunning, monumental WPA-style murals of master artist Hugo Ballin, who worked in Los Angeles from the 1920s through the ’50s and is the artist responsible for the iconic murals of Griffith Observatory.

From there, we’ll zip over to Glendale for a tour of the over-the-top Moderne Alex Theatre, with its neon-embellished edifice (added in 1940) and 100-foot-tall Art Deco column.

Following lunch at local favorite Green Street Restaurant in Pasadena, our afternoon will continue as we delve into the area’s Arts and Crafts gems! Attendees will experience an expert-led introduction to the movement as we tour Bungalow Heaven, a landmark district named for its more than 800 modest craftsman homes built there from 1900 to 1930 — most of which still stand.

Our enthralling look into Arts and Crafts architecture and design will conclude with a private-guided tour of The Gamble House, the ultimate bungalow. Largely considered the movement’s pièce de résistance, this 1908 masterpiece by the firm of Greene and Greene will give us an inside view of the pinnacle of Arts and Crafts style.

To close this delightful day, we’ll enjoy a leisurely three-course dinner at The Raymond 1886, a charming example of Pasadena’s colorful past that carries on the city’s great traditions of Craftsman architecture and unparalleled hospitality. In the late nineteenth century, Pasadena became a destination for wealthy Easterners looking to escape harsh winter weather, and the Raymond Hotel was built as the first major resort hotel in the San Gabriel Valley in 1886, along with a charming caretaker’s cottage that now houses this unique restaurant. The hotel entertained celebrities such as Charlie Chaplin, Tom Mix, and Buster Keaton, who visited and filmed in Pasadena in the Roaring ’20s.
