About the Program

The Art Deco Society of New York (ADSNY) is excited to announce its latest spectacular travel opportunity: exploring the Deco architecture and design splendors of Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Catalina Island from Wednesday, May 10th, through Sunday, May 14th, 2023!

On this immersive trip, created just for ADSNY members, we will explore how the uniquely glamorous culture of Los Angeles — with its Golden Age of Hollywood — led to the creation of the city’s most beautiful Art Deco structures. In our explorations of various Los Angeles neighborhoods, attendees will get a first-hand glimpse into the breadth and variety of Art Deco adaptations unique to California’s architecture and design heritage. ADSNY’s exclusive Los Angeles experience will include:

  • Tours of iconic high-Deco skyscrapers clad in stunning terra-cotta and their sumptuous interiors
  • Seeing how the Art Deco movement of the City of Angels appropriated and combined the visual motifs of historic cultures — such as Asian and Egyptian — to create renowned over-the-top theaters
  • Special in-depth tours of Art Deco landmarks such as the hilltop Deco sanctuary of the Griffith Observatory, with its important Hugo Ballin murals
  • A tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House
  • Tours with local experts that show the late-era shift toward sleek Streamline Moderne forms and stunning examples of neon signage and architectural embellishments
  • Wonderful special access tours that show beautiful examples of WPA murals and interiors
  • Group meals in unique Deco and period restaurants

Heading south down the Pacific Coast Highway, ADSNY’s trip will also feature guided tours of the distinctive Art Deco heritage of both Santa Monica and Long Beach, and, as ocean liner aficionados, we are thrilled the RMS Queen Mary will be open once again during our visit, so in addition to the unique opportunity to spend two nights aboard this storied vessel, we are also planning to have in place several other events in its handsomely wood-paneled period rooms, including:

  • A private expert–guided tour of the the Queen Mary’s celebrated Art Deco spaces
  • Group dinner on board the ship
  • Sunday brunch on the QM

While in Long Beach, attendees will also enjoy an exclusive bus tour of must-see Deco sites led by the author of Long Beach Art Deco.

Our immersive afternoon exploration of the history and Art Deco heritage of Avalon on Catalina Island will include:

  • An engaging guided tour through the heart of the friendly and historic town of Avalon
  • A behind-the-scenes tour of the 1929 Catalina Casino, and special access to dressing rooms where stars prepared for their big performances, the grand ballroom, the theater’s original projection room, and even the Wrigley family’s luxuriously-appointed private viewing room, where Cecil B. DeMille screened his latest films

Attendees will have the option to remain on Catalina to attend the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles’ annual Avalon Ball on the evening of Saturday, May 13th. Tickets to the ball must be arranged directly with the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles, which has generously offered our attendees the member discount.

In addition to the memorable activities described above, attendees will have the option to join ADSNY for a 1-day, pre-program exploration of Art Deco and Craftsman treasures on Tuesday, May 9th, in Glendale, Burbank, and Pasadena. Click here for more details and cost information.
