About the Program:

The Art Deco Society of New York (ADSNY) invites you to our vibrant, exhilarating, gleaming Art Deco capital to enjoy an immersive extended weekend to explore and celebrate some of the world’s most recognizable examples of Art Deco architecture and design. In addition to the city’s interwar treasures and mementos of Jazz Age culture, we will dine in iconic hotspots that embody our favorite era.

Through a series of engrossing programs––led by acclaimed architectural, design, and culture historians––we’ll delve deep into 1920s and 1930s New York: home to the flapper, the speakeasy, and the belief that anything goes. This program focuses on the development of New York’s unmatched skyscrapers, which transformed the city into a modern, glittering metropolis.

This weekend will spotlight New York’s embrace of everything au courant, the dizzying heights of hopes and excesses of the 1920s, where even the stock market crash of 1929 and the economic downturn of the Great Depression did not halt the city’s progress. We will see that construction projects for some of the most famous and luxurious structures of the 1930s came to signal triumph over adversity, and these new skyscrapers embodied the upward thrust of the American spirit.

Pre-Program Reception: The Art Deco Poster

Kick off this immersive Deco weekend with an exclusive evening reception and gallery talk that explores stunning and rare Art Deco posters as well as other notable twentieth century works on paper at Rennert’s Gallery.

This welcome activity, for attendees who arrive early, will be hosted by distinguished poster expert and gallery owner Jack Rennert and will give you the opportunity to meet the ADSNY team and converse with ADSNY members before the program commences the following morning.

Day 1: Midtown Icons and Delightful Deco Surprises

Award-winning tour guide, Anthony W. Robins, will lead attendees through some of the world’s most iconic Art Deco towers, such as the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings in midtown Manhattan, and reveal some delightful lesser-known Deco surprises, such as the Madison-Belmont Building in Murray Hill and Gramercy House in the Gramercy Park neighborhood.

Highlights of the day will include:

• Visits to premier Deco Towers and some of the most opulent and extraordinary 1920s and ‘30s lobbies ever designed
  
• Two of prominent architect Ely Jacques Kahn’s most impressive office towers
  
• Original 1924 ornamentation by French master ironwork designer Edgar Brandt on one of Manhattan's first buildings with Deco elements
  
• A respite from the hustle and bustle of midtown Manhattan to enjoy a three- course lunch at the welcoming culinary oasis, The Lambs Club. This Deco-inspired restaurant is a staple of the Great White Way and its landmark building was the original home to the turn of the century, members-only thespian society, from which the venue takes its name
  
• Two vastly different examples of stylized Art Deco terra cotta; one features monochromatic, yet exuberant abstracted floral patterns, with marine motifs, the other boasts vibrant, multicolored, geometric patterning

Following our day-long tour, attendees will have a short break to explore the city independently, or recharge before the evening festivities; when we will enjoy a nostalgic dinner at The Monkey Bar, a 1930s legend housed in one of the rare time capsules that emanates the spirit of a bygone era and will provide a lovely finish to our first day exploring the city.

Day 2: The Art of Rockefeller Center

After a special-access introduction to the captivating architectural embellishment of Hildreth Meière, we will get the inside scoop on the secrets behind the glamorous walls and hidden spaces of the world’s greatest Deco business center. This one-of-a-kind city within a city was created for commerce but conceived with art in mind. We will see beautiful Deco ornamentation, learn about the history of Rockefeller Center’s underground concourses, the world’s first artificial ice-skating rink, and so much more.

Our activities will include:

• An insiders’ tour of the exceptional 1920s and 30s decorative ornamentation of Hildreth Meière including Saint Bartholomew's Church, Saint Thomas Church, and Saint Patrick’s Cathedral led by her granddaughter Hildreth Meière Dunn and cultural historian Sibyl McCormac Groff
  
• A special look at the beautifully maintained, Donald Deskey-designed interiors of the Showplace of the Nation––Radio City Music Hall
  
• A three-course lunch at the elegant Brasserie Ruhlmann, located in the heart of Rockefeller Center, with interiors inspired by the paramount French Art Deco designer, Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann
  
• A tour of the famed architecture, design, and artwork of Rockefeller Center
  
• A visit to Top of the Rock for a birds-eye-view of the city, which offers one of the best views of the Empire State Building
  

Following our all-encompassing tour of Rockefeller Center, we will return to the hotel for a short break before stepping back in time for a bubbly return to the joie de vivre of Jazz Age Paris for a French-American champagne dinner at legendary Chez Josephine. Founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker, Josephine Baker’s adopted son, Chez Josephine is a sparkling tribute to the celebrated entertainer.

Day 3: Downtown Deco Treasures

For our final day we will join architectural historian Matt Postal for an insightful tour of the Deco towers that have long made the fabled skyline of downtown Manhattan a symbol of the world’s first modern metropolis. On this tour, attendees will see striking buildings that range from flamboyant skyscrapers to smaller, but equally imaginative, structures tucked between the towers of the Financial District.

Highlights of the day will include visits to:

• Noteworthy architect Ralph Walker’s Gothic Modern fantasy of the Irving Trust tower and his equally stunning, Art Deco-encrusted Cities Service headquarters
  
• The Downtown Athletic Club, which features an Olympic-size swimming pool in addition to a boxing ring, miniature golf course and more.
  

Following this dazzling walking tour, the program will officially conclude with a relaxing lunch at Gigino At Wagner Park. This stylish restaurant offers a spectacular view of The Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor.
