About the Event:

Current ADSNY members are invited to join their Deco friends for a spectacular afternoon in Greenwich Connecticut, where we will explore two vastly different collections that celebrate Art Deco. One collection chronicles Art Deco diners, neon lit motels, and old fashioned gas stations along the historic Route 66, while the other collection features stunning examples of French decorative arts and design produced by paramount designers such as Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann.

Our first stop of the day will be an engaging illustrated talk presented by Sally and Mike Harris, which will feature their stunning collection of photographs of Art Deco sites along what is left of Route 66––from  St. Louis, Missouri to Santa Monica, California. These captivating photographs chronicle middle American culture of the 1930s and give a glimpse into how diners, motels, and kitsch of the region existed in the period. Greenwich residents, Mike and Sally Harris, have developed a passion for cultural photography and travel around the globe to capture the essence of their destination and the people who live there.

Following the talk on American Art Deco design, ADSNY members are invited into the private residence of acclaimed author and decorative arts and design historian, Alastair Duncan. Attendees will revel in a private tour of his collection of French Art Deco and Art Nouveau masterworks and will enjoy a reception before departing for Manhattan. Alastair Duncan has authored 35 books on Art Deco and Art Nouveau decorative arts and his work as an officer and consultant at Christies from 1977–1990 has made him a leading authority on the subjects.

This unique afternoon will highlight how the Art Deco style was successfully adapted to various design mediums over the first half of the twentieth century to serve contrasting functions in two countries. These collections juxtapose French decorative arts created for luxurious private residences of the socially elite during the 1920s, to commercial, streamlined American architecture designed for a thriving middle-class society on the go, in the 1930s and 40s.

You won’t want to miss this very special program designed just for ADSNY members. This incredible afternoon will fill quickly. Register today to guarantee your spot!
